The city of Quincy is approximately 7 miles southeast of downtown Boston. It is densely settled with about 90,000 residents. It has a rich Native American, colonial, and industrial history and a wide range of natural environments (upland and bottomland forests, marshes, swamps, ponds, vernal pools, meadows, bogs, islands, rivers, estuaries, and 27 miles of coastline). A Green Map of Quincy would assist the QEN in its efforts to promote and educate people about Quincy’s environment. With a map of Quincy’s natural and cultural resources, residents can make connections between their own lives and those resources; such connections may spur residents to explore and support Quincy’s environment. The QEN also has a subcommittee on climate change, and the map, which will highlight places such as the farmers' market, where to get a recycling bin, wind turbine test sites, etc., would be useful in supporting that committee’s efforts to get the city, local businesses, and residents to adopt more sustainable practices.
