About this Map

Malama Kaua'i is a Kilauea based non-profit working to raise awareness on the importance of sustainability, to assist in implementing sustainable practices, and to support sustainable projects beneficial to the community. The word "malama" means to tend or take care of and, of course, Kaua'i is the name of our beautiful island home. The Malama Kaua’i Green Map, a project of Malama Kaua’i, aims to influence sustainable purchasing and behaviors by highlighting businesses and organizations with environmentally, socially, and culturally responsible practices. A printed map and online directory will feature businesses that are environmentally and socially conscious, as well as organizations and other entities working on issues related to sustainability. By educating consumers and suppliers, the map program will reduce waste, prevent pollution, and conserve natural resources, while also expanding the buy local movement. As social justice is fundamental to sustainability, the map will also feature businesses and organizations that respect and perpetuate Native Hawaiian culture.

The map will also be an educational resource for locals and visitors alike. It will explain the importance of diversifying our economy, buying local, caring for our environment, and working towards island self-sufficiency.

By teaming with locally-owned restaurants, shops, product manufacturers, offices, non-profits, community groups and others, the Malama Kaua’i Green Map Project hopes to influence effective and sustainable change. Creating a more sustainable economic system on Kaua’i is of immediate importance if we wish to preserve our natural resources and culture, as well as create a more equitable and just society. Simply put, the map is a tool that supports an already dynamic worldwide sustainability movement
